Match report:

Bradninch Cricket Club played host to the final game of the East Devon district program on Sunday. After two comprehensive victories, East manager Vince Reddick was expecting a good game from a side containing three Devon players. The toss went the way of the East, as is the way on early season pitches, the South were invited to bat. Up to now, the East boys had been fielding well and taking their catches. Unfortunately, off the third ball of the game the East managed to shell one. Undeterred by the error, the East encouraged each other and got on with it. The East opened the bowling again with Ollie Dawe (Exmouth) and TorZiegler-Evans (Exeter), the pair had ripped out 7 West wickets in their opening burst a week earlier.

This week, the opposition was more resilient, but Ollie Dawe (7-0-20-2) soon removed the opener Bishop (13) and bowled well in his opening spell. Tor Ziegler-Evans (7-2-27-0) wasn’t quite as potent as the previous week, labouring up the hill at Bradninch. James Vanstone (5-0-19-1) was soon in to the attack and claimed opener Tollins with some good bowling, taking 1 for 19 from his five overs. The ever reliable spin of Dom Bess (8-5-14-3) at the other end soon got the East on top as wickets fell readily. Only stubborn, and occasionally belligerent resistance from Gareth Penrice stood in the way of the East reducing another district to a low score. Penrice demonstrated a good array of stroke play as he compiled an excellent 41 before falling to Bess. The East finally cleaned up the tail thanks in no small part to the Heathcoat pairing of Jack Maunder and Jamie Drew. Two entries in the district score book of ‘stumped Maunder, bowled Drew’ had a familiar ring about it, leaving the South 117 all out, and Drew finishing with 2 for 3 in 3.4 overs.

After tea, the East set about overhauling the required total. The opening pair of Dan MacLaurin (32) and Jack Maunder needed to concentrate under the early onslaught of Jack Thomas and H Whitlock and had added 24 before Maunder (16) fell caught behind off of Jack Thomas. Thomas in particular, made it very difficult for the openers to settle with some accurate sharp bowling and then clean bowling Marcus Hoddinott with an absolute ‘jaffa’. Once he had finished his opening spell, things calmed down and the East gradually got on top and progressed nicely towards victory. By now MacLaurin had been joined at the crease by Henry Gater and the pair looked to be settling in. They had added 55 when Dan MacLaurin was ‘Yorked’ by Whitlock for 32 and the South still had a stake in the game. Two more quick wickets reduced the East to 105 for 6 and the finishing line was still a few runs away, especially as the ever threatening Jack Thomas (8-1-31-2) had returned, steaming in down the hill. Henry Gater enjoyed the additional pace on the ball, thumping some big shots to all areas. The South were profligate with their catches, and this may well have cost them ultimate victory. The East made the South pay for the dropped chances, Gater finishing unbeaten on 41 as the East reached 119 for 6 with 14.3 overs to spare. This completed the clean sweep over the other districts, leaving the East Devon Under 13’s as District Champions for 2010.
